Work Continues on the Rocky Creek Viaduct

Caltrans is continuing with emergency repairs to Highway 1 near the Rocky Creek Bridge, 12 miles south of Carmel. Caltrans previously stabilized and reinforced Highway 1 at this location after a March 30, 2024, slipout resulted in a loss of a section of the southbound lane. The southbound lane of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek was reopened to travel on March 8, 2025, after completion of the southbound viaduct structure. Construction continues on the northbound viaduct structure. The estimate for final completion of the Rocky Creek viaduct is summer 2025, with that date dependent on conditions encountered during construction. The contractor for this project is Gordon N. Ball, Inc. of Walnut Creek, CA.

Upcoming Full Overnight Closures at Rocky Creek in June

Travelers will encounter four full overnight closures on Highway 1 at Rocky Creek during the month of June. All of these will take place on Sundays starting at 10 pm with the full closure ending on the following Monday at 6 am. During the first full overnight closure on June 1, crews will pour the concrete deck for the northbound viaduct structure where girders were installed May 16/17. The other three closures in June are related to a seawall restoration project near the shore below the Rocky Creek Bridge. During these three overnight closures a crane will be set up which spans both lanes of travel, necessitating the full overnight closure.

Full overnight closures of Highway 1 at Rocky Creek will be in effect:

  • Sunday, June 1 at 10 pm to Monday, June 2 at 6 am
  • Sunday, June 8 at 10 pm to Monday, June 9 at 6 am
  • Sunday, June 22 at 10 pm to Monday, June 23 at 6 am
  • Sunday, June 29 at 10 pm to Monday, June 30 at 6 am
